Social Media and Societal Fragmentation

Democracy requires a majority to coalesce around specific ideas and/or parties. In many ‘western’ countries this has become much harder to achieve as social media, and information technology more widely, has facilitated the creation of self-reinforcing subsets of the population. When self-identified groupings are combined with political parties the outcome can reduce the effective governability of states.
