• Trump and Jared: after a somewhat successful first overseas trip the US news cycle refocused on the ongoing Russia investigation. The first son-in-law is reportedly being looked at by various agencies after he was supposed to have discussed, during the transition, the creation of a back-channel with Moscow using Russian communication equipment – presumably to avoid US eavesdropping.

  • NATO, G7 and Trump: Trump lectured the vast majority of countries at the NATO meeting regarding financial burdens and the need for more spending. He did not give the litmus test support to Article 5, regarding collective defence, although his national security team claim he backs it. At the G7 meeting Trump did not give reassurances about the Paris climate agreement or US trade intentions.

  • Merkel, Macron and the EU: feeling that the election of a strongly pro-European French president gives her some room to maneuver, Merkel sought to change the wider narrative towards further EU integration. She stated that the US and UK could not be completely relied upon – hence, requiring Europe to step up and fill the void. Czech and Slovak PMs have already called for no treaty changes.
